TEMCo's anchor and chain shackles are made with strong, durable, and corrosion-resistant 316 stainless steel capable of withstanding thousands of pounds of force. These shackles come with two different designs and three different sizes. Whether you're going to shackle a rope eye to an anchor chain or keep one around in your car, truck, or SUV for emergency towing, TEMCo's shackles are guaranteed to work just as hard as you.

Choosing The Right Shackle

Shackle Type Pros Cons
Anchor Shackle
  • Designed for directional load.
  • Can easily handle multiple load lines.
  • Harder to keep lines straight.
  • May not orient correctly after load line becomes untaut.
Chain Shackle
  • Can keep lines straight even after the line was loose.
  • Not designed for directional loads.

Though both the anchor and chain shackles are capable of bearing a tremendous load, choosing a shackle depends on your application. A chain shackle's elongated and narrow shape allows the shackle to maintain tension in a straight line on its longest axis. However, it is at its weakest when tension is created in various angles, and most weak when it must bear a load at its sides. Using any chain shackle sideways is highly unrecommended.

The unique shape of the anchor shackle with its circular bow section allows the shackle to mitigate the weakness of a chain shackle. An anchor shackle is ideal for applications where two lines often move about and directional load is unavoidable. However, because of its larger inner diameter, loose lines may more easily shift the orientation of the shackle sideways resulting in less optimal working load limits.

To ensure your chain fits our shackle, make sure the inner diameter of your chain is greater than the shackle's size and that your chain's size is less than the inner diameter of the shackle. Please see our data and specifications sheet for these details.

Safe Working Load and Minimum Breaking Load

Our shackles come in three different shackle diameters: 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2". These are the measurements of the cross section diameter of the bow end of the shackle. Larger shackles will, of course, bear a heavier load.

Please note your safe working load is relative to your application relative to the minimum breaking load.

Safety Wire and Mousing

Don't lose your expensive anchor!

Adding safety wire, or "mousing," allows you to securely attach the clevis pin to the shackle so that the pin doesn't slip out resulting in a loss of your property. Loop the wire through the pin and shackle in a figure-eight pattern and make at least three passes, as shown above, for a secured pin and peace of mind.

For maritime use and any other applications where strength and corrosion resistance are necessary, we highly recommend using TEMCo 316L Stainless Steel 20 AWG (0.032" diameter) Wire.

You can also use a screwdriver or rod and insert it into the pin hole to tighten or loosen it. If the pin is seized, we recommend using your favorite lubricant to prevent galling.

Features

  • Leverage can be applied to clevis pin with bored center hole via a screw driver or rod for secure lock.
  • Bored center can also be used to easily mouse the pin securely to the shackle.
  • Depending on shackle size, the maximum working load limit ranges between 24.4 to 54.9 kilonewtons of force. Safe working load depends on application, and even orientation of the shackle under load.
  • 1/4" 3/8" and 1/2" sizes measure the diameter of the shackle's cross section.
  • Made out of premium 316 stainless steel to drastically reduce wear and corrosion.
